Mirage on Display University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
|
|
The images below are from Jason Ashworth. The photographs were taken while he
was studying Aeronautical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
(he graduated in December 2002). In his own words, The Mirage F1 is in the
Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, North-West Engineering Building. Our
lecturer gave us a walk around of the F1 in our lab. They now also keep
the canopy open so yours truly did not miss the oppurtunity to jump in and fiddle
around. Most of the original gauges are still intact (the overhead compass
and clock are missing), and the ejection seat is still live! (safety pins
everywhere) No engine unfortunately (probably now residing in a Cheetah
C). There is however, an Atar 09B (the petal-exhaust MIIIC version) in the
lab too, as well as the removed Cyrano radar. I'm a small guy but the
Mirage cockpit just 'fits' me. Click images for larger view.

Jason is now 'studying' for his Masters degree in engineering. I have an office (used to be the printer room!) in the
same lab where our Mirage F1 is parked, so I get to see a Mirage every time I walk in and out of my office. We don't have
a simulator though :-( .
