Pick of the Week Link

The page features aircraft created by various Flight Simulator enthusiasts
from around the world.  The goal is to feature a new aircraft each week.

Mirage F1C
Dassault Mirage F1-C Armée de l'Air

The F1 was originally a private venture by Dassault-Breguet as a scaled down single seat version of the F2 two-seat fighter.  Although the prototype was lost, the French government funded three pre-production F1s.  The first flight of these new aircraft was in March 1969.  The advantages of this type over the Mirage III/5 series was immediately evident with the F1 offering two to three times better performance in many areas.

The French Armée de l'Air took delivery of over 200 F1C interceptors.  The F1 proved equally popular with many foreign operators as well, particularly the F1E version with its more powerful engine and advanced avionics and weapons delivery systems.  However, it did not prove as popular with other European countries; losing to the General Dynamics F-16 in the "Deal of the Century" to re-equip the aging NATO fleets.

This particular aircraft displays the unit insignia and code of Reim-based ECTT 3/33 "Arms of Lorraine" -- one of the first Armée de l'Air units to receive the type in 1974.   The original blue-grey color has been replaced with desert colors ("sand and chectnut") as seen during operations in the Gulf War of the early 1990s.  Aside from a company demonstrator, this camouflage was first worn with Armée de l'Air insignia by EC 4/30 "Vixon", operating out of Djibouti, a French Protectorate in north-east Africa, beginning in 1988.

This Flight Simulator aircraft was designed by Jason Ashworth.  This particular aircraft was painted by Marc Siméon.  The aircraft features moving spoilers, elevators, ailerons, flaps and landing gear.  Other versions available by Jason Ashworth include a South African Air Force F1CZ (F1CZ.ZIP) and F1AZ (SF1AZ11.ZIP), the latter including a nice instrument panel by Mike McCormack.  The panel is very realistic for the F1 and is easily adapted to all versions.

Can you tell I like the Mirage F1?
