  The Mirage 4000

A private Dassault venture, the Mirage 4000 first flew in 1979.  Despite its advanced design, no orders were recieved from either the Armée de l'Air or export customers for this F-15 class fighter mainly because of its high cost (and because the Mirage 2000 was a better value).  In 1986, Dassualt re-activated it, renamed it to 'Mirage 4000' (from 'Super Mirage 4000'), and re-painted it in desert camouflage.  It was used as a chase plane and a testbed for the Rafale program.  It is now on permanent display outside the "Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace" in Paris.
